Power-saving Sony Xperia 1 V may adopt new display technology claims leaker

An interesting rumor about the Sony Xperia 1 V has surfaced recently in regard to the 2023 flagship smartphone’s display. Apparently, Sony will introduce LTPO technology for the Xperia 1 V’s OLED panel, but the source of this information has stated that the end result of this introduction might not serve as some may expect.

It seems the next-generation high-end Xperia phone, which will likely be known as the Sony Xperia 1 V, will utilize some new display technology (at least new to the Xperia range). This will supposedly come in the form of an LTPO panel, with the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide allowing for an additional power-saving feature. LTPO displays can make use of variable refresh rates, which can in turn help save a smartphone’s battery life.

While “LTPO” has already become a familiar term in the smartphone world, with devices such as the Xiaomi 12 Pro and Apple iPhone 14 Pro coming with LTPO displays, Sony has so far avoided using the tech for its Xperia lineup. The Xperia 1 IV comes with a 4K-capable OLED panel with a fixed 120 Hz refresh rate, so the Xperia 1 V would be the first device in the well-liked range to adopt the new variable-rate display technology.

However, the source of this information (Weibo via SumahoDigest) also claims that the Xperia 1 V’s LTPO display might not be able to utilize a power-saving variable refresh rate when operating with a 4K resolution. This doesn’t seem to make much sense, as it would be pointless to adopt and lock the new tech at a specific refresh rate just to enable 4K on the Sony Xperia 1 V. But an LTPO panel does have the potential to work well and help save power for the Mark 5 variant of the Xperia 1 when displaying FHD content.
