This could be the first Netflix show that absolutely demands an immediate rewatch.
Say what you will about Netflix, it can’t be said that they’re not – sometimes – willing to try new things, and upcoming show Kaleidoscope may well its most innovative venture yet.
Remember how cutting edge Bandersnatch felt when it arrived in the days after Christmas 2018? And early 2023 will bring Netflix’s first ever live streaming broadcast.
So, yeah, always keeping an open mind.
And that experimental attitude continues with their new series Kaleidoscope, which dropped its explainer trailer this week (see below).
The show’s centerpiece is a $70 billion heist set against Hurricane Sandy, but the events actually kick off 24 years before the robbery, and continue on six months afterwards.
The series allows viewers to watch the first seven episodes in any order, ahead of the eighth and final episode.
As you can watch those first seven episodes in whatever sequence you feel like, that means there are NINE MILLION different ways to watch this show.
If you’re thinking to yourself “Wait, surely it will mean this whole thing won’t make sense?”, well, the show’s creator Eric Garcia (Matchstick Men, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) has something interesting to say about that:
“Being able to move around and watch different orders gives you a different viewpoint on the characters. There are questions that are going to be asked in one episode that are answered in another episode. Similarly, there’ll be answers in an episode that you ‘re watching that you don’t even know are answers to something until you see the question when you watch another episode.”
The cast of the show includes Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Paz Vega (Spanglish), Rufus Sewell (The Holiday), Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad) and Tati Gabrielle (Uncharted), with episodes directed by Jose Padihla (Elite Squad, Narcos ) and it has Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Alien, The Martian) on board as executive producer!
All eight episodes of Kaleidoscope arrive on Netflix on Sunday, January 1, 2023.
