Mark Millar’s New Vampire Series Has the Lowest Cover Price in Modern Comics

Mark Millar’s new Night club vampire series will be sold to fans at an extremely low cover price.

CBR can exclusively reveal Millarworld’s Night club, a new series launching later this year, will be sold to fans for $1.99 an issue. “The biggest thing I hear in comic stores is that comic books are too expensive and everyone is absolutely right,” Millar said. “I remember them creeping up to three dollars and then four dollars became the norm and now I’m seeing five and six dollars for a single issue when you generally read them in about ten minutes. But I also understand why the costs have gone up Overheads are enormous compared to typical magazines and if you pay the creators properly you’re out tens of thousands of dollars per issue and up to two or three hundred thousand dollars upfront for every six issue run before they’re collected into a trade. Millarworld prides itself on asking artists what they get paid at Marvel and DC and INCREASING that rate to get them to work for us so we’re very aware of the numbers involved, but at the same time I really want to try a crazy experiment.

“We’re going to take our most commercial and high-profile launch this year and sell it at less than half the price of a current comic. We’re going to slap $1.99 on every issue of Night club and just see what happens. The artist we’ve hired is fantastic. Juanan Ramírez has been doing some amazing stuff over at Marvel so it’s a total treat to have him here. Night club itself is a big show I created in-house at Netflix and it’s a super-commercial concept so it seems like a great franchise to try the experiment on. Upping prices all the time seems like a bad move when people are tightening their belts in the real world so I really want to give this a try. Every time the prices have changed in comics since Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson gave us Detective Comics almost 90 years ago they’ve gone north instead of south.

“This is therefore the first time in comics history someone has gone in the opposite direction and charging LESS money for their big new book. Sure, it means we have to sell twice as many copies to make the same money, but if this works and does as well as I think it will it’s something I really want to see Marvel and DC replicate. This could be a game-changer for everyone. The creative team still get paid the same big bucks and the customer gets their comics at half-price . It’s perfect.”

Earlier this week, Millar also announced two new series debuting in 2023: Big Gamewhich is a new crossover series featuring art by X-Men‘s Pepe Larraz, duck Nemesis Reloadedwhich is a return to the character created by Millar and Steve McNiven in 2010 featuring art by Batman‘s Jorge Jiménez. “We stole Marvel and DC’s biggest artists this week, but I think this might actually be even bigger because it could change things for everyone if it works,” Millar said. “I love shaking things up. It’s always fun to try something new. Night club is out in December and I have a feeling this is going to be massive. Let’s see if it catches on.”

The synopsis for Night club #1 reads, “You’re 17 years old and you’ve been bitten by a vampire? Do you live in the shadows and drink human blood or use your new-found gifts for the dream life of a costumed superhero like you always wanted ? You’re bulletproof, you can crawl up walls, turn to mist, bats or even a wolf. Why not have fun? Note: THIS SERIES WILL BE $1.99. TAKE THAT, DC & MARVEL!”

Night club cover art comes from Ramírez, Greg Capullo, Ben Oliver and Dani Strips. The first issue releases in December.
